GPOAdmin Active Directory partition DC=staging,DC=gpoadmin prevents DC to be demoted do to lack of a DNS zone for this partition
Description
we have AD application partition DC=staging,DC=gpoadmin in AD domain where GPOAdmin is installed, we need to remove its replica from one AD due to demoting of this DC.
Cause
Quest instruction on creating the AD application partition only covers the NTDSUTIL part. It does not automatically create a DNS zone (because the DNS solution can be separate from Active Directory). Microsoft says that having an AD partition without its DNS zone is not a supported scenario, event though It all works fine until you try to demote a DC, which is not a common scenario.
Resolution
Enhancement request to change the information and/or handling of the application partition used for the GPO Modelling feature so that it will not interfere with demoting a DC in the future. ER Number: 453806
